INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :REFLECTION

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN
REFLECTION

This a difficulty metal skin, you can image from a flat sheet, become a hollow surface. How many effort put on it. Create the curve is difficult, have to work step by step, be patient for the metal, take care of the metal. Each time stretch and shrink would bring the skin to different shape, check with the template each of time.  It provide me a opportunity to learn process a metal fabracation and polished. It is a challenge and learing. I satified what I have been produce.
Overall it provide me different experience, it is a great learning skill, use differnt methods and tools to produce the interdisciplinary skin.

When I look at the metal skin that I create, remind me of Cloud Gate.
Cloud Gate is British artist Anish Kapoor's first public outdoor work installed in the United States.

I love the Cloud Gate, Once people walk close to it, you would see people flowing like a mirror. It also create the interior space and exterior space. It is simple and elegant to demonstrate the beautiful.
I am a interior architecture student, I alway see thing from exterior to interior. My metal
skin could be a desk, table , a chair or could be a piece of artwork in the retail shop. Small detail could hep the enbright the interior space. Bring our life away from boring.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :FINAL SKIN

FINAL SKIN

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :SIXTH DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN
SIXTH DAY

It is the day for polished, use different type of sand papers, there are p320, p600 and p1200. One direct once a time, first sanding is most important. This process may take 2-3 hours, because you want to give it shine and beautiful skin. It is all about musle work, it is hard work, take your time.
Compare the skin to the template.
Views from different angle.
Finally, using the brass to clear the surface. You would surprise youslef. Look! Look! Look!
That is the beautiful and shine skin.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :FIFTH DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN
FIFTH DAY

Still need some adjustment for the metal skin. because the metal skin is irrgularity at the moment. The rugged surface. If you want the skin look beautiful and nice clear. Then use the iron hammer heat on the skin surface, it will help the skin get rid of the bump. Remember do not heat it too hard, it leave the hammer mark on the metal skin.
Clear the front, and it looks good.
If has the heavy hammer mark on it, use the red hammer to clear the surface. The whole process will take 2-3 hours.
You would see the little hammer mark from inside. It mean you already heat the whole metal skin. You already done a great job.

After you done the hammer work, usee the english wheel, give the surface nice and clear. Remember do not cross direction when you using it. It also help the metal shrinking, careful use it.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :FOURTH DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN

FOURTH DAY
It is not easy to giving the curve for the head, you need to find the right shape support material.
Mark the line for the head position, shrink that part above the wood support. slowly and slowly, the metal will closing together, remember to get rid of the folds.
Side view for the head position.
The whole metal skin still need to wook on for next day.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN :THIRD DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN

THIRD DAY
Use the methylated spirits to clear the marking line on the metal skin, it will helpful for you to visual on it. You can see one marking line the metal skin, that part is the one I need to shrink. Put the template into the metal skin, knocke on it, listen to it. look at it you would see the gap between the template and the metal skin. You will understand which part is empty, which part is soild.
From the direct perspective, it already looks like a mouse. It is almost create  the curve shape.
Check it each time, step by step, repect the work you done before.
That the angle I create for the metal skin.
I found the most difficult part is to create the angle for the mouse front, so I found the similar shape wood, heat it from inside to outside by using the iron hammer. The iron hammer is helping to stretch the metal.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN: SECOND DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN

SECOND DAY

When I put template into the metal sheet, you can see two edges start to touch  the metal skin.
From the side way, you can see the only left small folds, leave it there, will trim the top part later. Also clearly show the metal is close to the template.
That is inside the of the metal skin, we can clearly see the curvature.
A clear view from the front, I left with a marker pen mark, repeats the first day  steps to get this radian. It is all about shrinking, use your eye to see, use your hand to feel the metal skin.
Trim the top part of the metal skin, start to pulling two side close to the template. Remember to leave more space when you trim the metal skin. More better than less.
The tips for shrinking the marks part, you need to heat it from inside to outside on the spherical tool. Check it everytime, put the template into it, try get more imformation from it.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN: FIRST DAY

INTERDISCIPLINARY SKIN
FIRST DAY
I have chosen the template of Victor Zhang from the discipline of Architecture, which is a mouse. He only done half of mouse metal fabrication. I chose to do whole of it. I love this template and it will be challenge for fabrication
Calculate the length and width of the mouse, and draw the approximate distance on the piece of metal.
The spherical tool and hammers are halp me on the metal fabrication.
Mark the approximate shape on the metal sheet. Follow the marking line to shrink it. Hold the metal above the spherical tool, heat it slowly and  finding the gap in between the metal and spherical tool, continuous cycle beating it. Suggestion is not how hard you heat on the metal, it is where are you heating it. Shrinking technic use a lot on this modle fabrication.
Compare the metal sheet with the template, it start to having the shape. You can see the folds around the metal skin. The most difficult part is to get rid of metal folds, need to heat it around the circle, couple times, be patient on it.
Finaly, on first day I come up with the shape close to the template.
Reminder take the gloves with you, it will help and good protection for you.
